Calico Moonlight

September 10th 2022

Description

This is a Moonlight night thru the Calico Mountains.  Tow vehicles can be left in the dirt parking lot at Peggy Sue’s

A note about the possible temperatures…  The historic daytime high was 114, low of 53, expect it to be 103 at 8 PM.  I know how good a beer goes down when it’s hot but please no drinking until we hit camp.

We’ll visit Tin Can Alley, Sweetwater Spring, Bismark Mine, and Wall Street.  We’ll exit the mountains by going West to Fort Irwin Rd and drive on pavement to Fossil Bed Rd. (dirt again).  This will take us to camp at the BLM Owl Campground. There is a vault toilet, picnic tables, and fire rings there. I anticipate to temperature to have cooled off to the mid 70's or low 80’s by 1-2 AM.   Bring a sleeping mat to make the ground sort of soft and do not expect a camp fire.  There will be plenty of moonlight.

If there is interest and time we’ll run thru rainbow basin at night or on the morning or both.  We’ll see.

At sun up it heats up fast.  We hit the pavement not too far from camp and air up.  Then go South into and thru Barstow to the Freeway and then home.  I’ll be going back to Peggy Sue’s Dinner for my tow vehicle.

Get gas in Barstow or when you get off the freeway in Yermo.

Go out I-15 to Yermo.  Get off the freeway at Ghost Town Rd and meet a Peggy Sue’s Diner for dinner at 8 PM.  Tow vehicles can be left in the dirt parking lot at Peggy Sue’s.

Last gas - get it in when you get off the freeway in Yermo.  There’s a Subway on the North side of the freeway if you need a midnight snack sandwich.
